Supporting Mental Wellbeing in Engineering

Insights from Foothold at Our Service Delivery Leadership Conference

In June, we hosted our annual Service Delivery Management Event, bringing together leaders from across the business to share knowledge, discuss industry developments, and focus on the issues that matter most to our people and our sector.

As part of the event, we welcomed several guest speakers, including Jonny Rudge from Foothold, the charitable arm of the engineering community. Foothold provides invaluable support to engineers and their families at every stage of life and career, helping individuals navigate challenges ranging from financial difficulties and health concerns to caring responsibilities, workplace issues and emotional wellbeing.

One of the key themes of Jonny’s presentation was mental health, a topic that continues to grow in importance across the engineering and infrastructure industries. While engineering can offer rewarding and fulfilling careers, professionals often face unique pressures, including demanding projects, tight deadlines, changing working environments and the need to balance work and personal commitments.

Jonny shared insights into the mental health challenges facing the engineering community today and highlighted the importance of recognising when support may be needed. His session encouraged delegates to continue fostering open conversations around wellbeing, helping to create working environments where people feel empowered to seek support when they need it.

A valuable resource highlighted during the presentation was Foothold’s Mental Health Check-In Service, which offers a confidential way for individuals to assess their wellbeing and access appropriate support. The service is designed to help people better understand their mental health and identify practical steps they can take to maintain or improve it.

At MJ Quinn, we recognise that the wellbeing of our people is fundamental to both personal and professional success. Events such as these provide an important opportunity to raise awareness, share resources and reinforce the message that support is available for anyone who may be facing challenges.

Following the event, we caught up with Jonny to hear his reflections on the day, the conversations he had with attendees, and his views on the importance of prioritising mental wellbeing within the engineering profession. Read his thoughts below.
