Health and Safety

Achievements:

  • Regular H&S Audits are  undertaken throughout the year by a growing team of HSQE advisors.
  • All current Policies and Procedures reviewed and updated.
  • Regular Fire and Emergency Evacuation Testing.
  • We have a number of trained Fire Marshalls across 3 sites
  • We have sufficient Trained First Aiders across the sites
  • A number of Mental Health First Aiders across the sites
  • Business Continuity Planning – MJ Quinn has a designated team tasked with identifying, developing, acquiring, documenting, and testing procedures and resources that will ensure continuity of a company’s key operations in the event of an accident, disaster, emergency, and/or threat.

Aspirations:

  • Wellbeing at Work – MJ Quinn emphasises the importance of promoting health and wellbeing in the workplace. Investing in staff wellbeing can have positive outcomes both for staff and the companies. With this in mind, the company is engaging on a programme of training employees to be “Mental Health” Champions.

QUALITY

Achievements:

  • Supplier Audits – Many suppliers and subcontractors, have been enrolled via the companies’ stringent “on-boarding process”, which enables management to ensure that all companies engaged by MJ Quinn reach and maintain the high standards expected.

Aspirations:

  • The company is currently working on integrating their already effective management systems in Quality, the Environment and Health and Safety into one integrated system (IMS). This IMS will benefit our organisation through increased efficiency and effectiveness, and cost reductions while minimizing the disruption caused by several external audits.

Environment

MJ Quinn recognises the importance of, and is committed to, the safeguarding of human health and the environment. Our environmental and sustainability objectives are a central part of how we function as we recognise our business has both direct and indirect environmental impacts.

To identify opportunities and drive progress our environmental policy and ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System provides the framework to:

  • Manage environmental risk
  • Minimise or mitigate environmental impacts
  • Remain compliant with all applicable legislation
  • Develop and promote environmental awareness
  • Establish environmental responsibilities at all levels, and
  • Report on environmental performance

Encouraging and supporting our partners in their contribution to managing environmental impacts is important to us, whether that be through increased reuse and recycling, choosing web conferencing over business travel, smarter planning (e.g. job clustering), and training provision.

Our array of services covering telecoms (e.g. full fibre network build) and critical infrastructure & energy comprises a large and complex nationwide operation requiring nearly 2000 commercial vehicles and diverse material consumption. This means that working to reduce our emissions and supporting a circular economy are the biggest ways we can reduce our environmental impact – and we are increasing our efforts to do so.

We manage our other environmental impacts and risks with equal attention, such as reducing waste, tackling air and noise pollution, preventing and being prepared to manage harmful incidents (e.g. spills), and protecting native biodiversity.

How we use, design, or update our fixed assets offers further scope for improved energy and environmental performance. So far, we have done so through improvements including installing low energy lighting with passive infrared sensors within our premises, with active plans to implement solar arrays on our headquarters and EV charge points to support our fleet transition objectives.

Achievements:

  • Development and implementation of our Sustainability Action Plan, which has given us the framework to set and achieve targets for environmental, societal, and economic sustainability.
  • Through reduced energy and fuel consumption MJ Quinn has achieved carbon footprint reduction with 1485 tonnes of CO2 emissions saved between July 2021 and March 2023.
  • We have set a pathway for Net Zero operations to align our carbon saving targets with those required to support the COP21 Paris Agreement and limit global warming to 1.5°.
  • Carbon accounting undertaken with monthly reporting, which provides us with a baseline to set any carbon reduction targets – it also ensures we have the information required for statutory carbon disclosure.
  • Trial use of electric vans undertaken to inform future fleet decarbonisation plans.
  • 7% improvement in landfill diversion rates bringing waste generated during our operations to 91% diverted from landfill.
  • We install low energy lighting with PIR controls in our buildings, which means significantly lower energy consumption (up to 60%), less waste due to longer lasting bulbs, and reduced emissions.
  • We have removed all hand towels in favour or air dryers. Through reduced consumption of this product, savings will be made by avoiding emissions usually produced during production, distribution, and disposal (roughly 1.2 grams of CO2 per sheet).
  • Video conferencing and hybrid working when suitable to reduce travel.
  • Paper use reduction through advances in digital applications. This is demonstrated by paper orders not increasing despite the business almost doubling in size when comparing 2021 and 2022 figures to date.
  • Successful renewal of ISO14001 – international benchmark of environment management systems – certification for further year.

Aspirations:

  • Decarbonisation of owned assets by:
  • Switching to 100% renewable electricity supply;
  • Increasing EV charge points at our sites to support fleet ambitions;
  • Installing solar PV arrays with battery storage, and;
  • Removal of gas fired boilers.
  • Convert our fleet to electric or zero emissions vehicles to levels sufficient to support our net zero ambitions.
  • Grey fleet (employee commuting) decarbonisation by implementing schemes such as ULEV salary sacrifice.
  • Achieve net zero operations by 2035 and net zero for our supply chain by 2050.
  • Removal of all single use plastics from our offices.
  • Bring landfill diversion to 100% and further improvement of recycling rates.

Sustainability

MJ Quinn is committed and is investing in a sustainable future as this is vital for the planet, our communities, customers and business.

Our Sustainability Plan 2021 has been developed in response to what has been MJ Quinn’s most significant period of growth and will help us achieve long-term positive impacts in the UK and beyond. With our newly developed plan we hope to make the biggest possible contribution to government initiatives and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

The plan is underpinned by the three central pillars of sustainable development with focus on 14 objectives (see below graphic), each of which can be categorised according to one of our four goals: customer orientated, locally focused, resource efficient and responsible.

As we grow, the strategy will also support our company-wide ethos for creating positive connections with our customers, our people, and our world. This integration will enable us to sustainably grow demand for our services, shape our reputation, identify risk and opportunity, and recognise and develop talent.

Supporting our clients

Our work is also making significant contribution in helping clients decarbonise to achieve their sustainability goals through:

Such endeavours further support national goals such as those aiming for a Green Industrial Revolution and the UNSDGs.
