ROWAN VIEW, ASHWORTH HOSPITAL

Solar PV Installation

CHALLENGE

Rowan View, a secure mental health facility within Ashworth Hospital, faced the dual challenge of managing high energy consumption and aligning with NHS sustainability targets. Operating 24/7, the site required a reliable and cost-effective energy solution that could reduce its carbon footprint while maintaining operational resilience. With rising energy costs and increasing pressure to meet environmental commitments, the hospital needed a long-term strategy to transition toward renewable energy.

KEY ISSUES ADDRESSED

high energy consumption

Healthcare facilities operate 24/7, leading to substantial energy
demand

cost efficiency

Rising energy prices necessitate long-term cost-saving solutions.

carbon footprint reduction

Aligning with NHS sustainability goals and the UK’s net-zero
targets.

site complexity

The varied roof orientations and tilt angles required a custom
design to maximise solar yield.

SOLUTION

MJ Quinn designed and installed a tailored solar PV system using 1,079 Hengdian Group DMEGC Magnetic Co. Ltd. DM445M10RT-54HSW/HBW modules across multiple roof sections at Rowan View. The system was engineered with 545 optimizers and 6 synergy inverters, delivering an installed DC capacity of 480.16 kWp. It produces an impressive 406.70 MWh of clean energy annually, saving approximately 78.65 tonnes of CO₂ emissions – the equivalent of planting 3,612 trees each year.

To maximise performance, the system features:

  • Optimized string configurations tailored to varied roof orientations and tilt angles.
  • Synergy inverters with advanced monitoring and integrated safety features.
  • A high-performance ratio of 90%, ensuring efficient energy conversion.
  • Minimal energy clipping (0.11%), indicating optimal system sizing and utilisation.

The design also accounted for environmental factors such as shading, reflection, and temperature losses, resulting in a robust, reliable, and future-proof renewable energy solution for the healthcare facility.

CONCLUSION

Rowan View’s solar installation is a model for sustainable healthcare infrastructure. By generating over 400 MWh of clean energy annually, the facility significantly reduces its carbon emissions and energy costs. This project highlights how innovative engineering and renewable technology can support public health services in achieving environmental and financial goals.
